An In-Depth Conversation with Grandmaster Henrik Hunstad: The Vision Behind the European Seminar for the Round Table Alliance

In the world of martial arts, few names are as synonymous with innovation and tradition as Grandmaster Henrik S. Hunstad. As the head of Sangrok Norge and a leading figure in the Round Table Alliance (RTA), Grandmaster Hunstad has been instrumental in promoting the growth and unity of martial arts across Europe. Ahead of the highly anticipated European Seminar and Conference in Oslo on 11th October 2025, I had the privilege of sitting down with Grandmaster Hunstad to discuss the event, his vision for the future of martial arts, and the importance of collaboration in our ever-evolving field.

Roy Rolstad:

„Grandmaster Hunstad, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. Can you start by telling us about the upcoming European Seminar for the Round Table Alliance?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„It’s a pleasure, Roy. The European Seminar is something I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time. It’s being organized by Sangrok Norge under the banner of the Round Table Alliance. The seminar is designed to bring together martial artists from all over Europe to share knowledge, explore different styles, and foster a sense of community. This year’s theme is “Unity in Diversity,” which speaks to the core mission of the RTA—celebrating the rich tapestry of martial arts while finding common ground in our shared passion.“

Roy Rolstad:

„That sounds incredible. What inspired you to organize such a large-scale event?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„The idea stemmed from my experiences over the years, traveling and teaching across various countries. I realized that while we all have our unique styles and techniques, there’s a universal language in martial arts. The Round Table Alliance was created to break down barriers and encourage dialogue among different martial arts traditions. The seminar is a platform for this dialogue—a place where we can learn from one another, exchange ideas, and grow together.““

Roy Rolstad:

„What can participants expect from the seminar in terms of content and structure?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„We’ve designed the seminar to be as inclusive and diverse as possible. There will be workshops led by top instructors from  different martial arts disciplines, covering everything from traditional forms to modern self-defense techniques. We’re also hosting panel discussions where participants can engage with experts on topics like the evolution of martial arts, the role of tradition in modern practice, and how we can protect and preserve our arts for future generations. It’s a comprehensive program that caters to both the novice and the seasoned practitioner.“

Roy Rolstad:

„You mentioned preserving the arts. How do you see the role of organizations like the Round Table Alliance in safeguarding the future of martial arts?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„The RTA plays a crucial role in ensuring that martial arts remain true to their roots while adapting to the changing times. By bringing together leaders from various styles, we can create a collective voice that advocates for the integrity and authenticity of martial arts. This collaborative approach helps us address challenges like  commercialization and dilution of traditional practices. It’s about striking a balance—honoring the past while embracing the future.“

Roy Rolstad:

„Speaking of balance, how do you personally balance tradition with innovation in your teachings at Sangrok Norge?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„It’s all about understanding the core principles of what we do. At Sangrok Norge, we emphasize the importance of fundamentals—stances, forms, discipline. Once these foundations are solid, we encourage students to explore and innovate. Martial arts are living, breathing disciplines; they must evolve to remain relevant. But this evolution should always be rooted in respect for tradition. Innovation without tradition is like a tree without roots—it may look strong, but it won’t stand the test of time.“

Roy Rolstad:

„With so much on the horizon, what excites you most about the future of martial arts in Europe?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„The potential for growth and collaboration. Events like the European Seminar are just the beginning. I see a future where martial arts schools and organizations across Europe work together more closely, sharing resources, expertise, and cultural insights. This kind of synergy can only strengthen our community, making martial arts more accessible and enriching for everyone.“

Roy Rolstad:

„Lastly, what would you say to someone considering  attending the seminar in Oslo?“

Henrik Hunstad:

„I’d say, don’t miss this opportunity. Whether you’re a student, instructor, or simply a martial arts enthusiast, the European Seminar offers something for everyone. It’s a chance to train with some of the best in the field, broaden your horizons, and be part of a growing movement that’s shaping the future of martial arts. Plus, Oslo is a beautiful city, and I’m sure attendees will enjoy the vibrant cultural experience it offers.“

Roy Rolstad:

„Thank you, Grandmaster Hunstad. I’m looking forward to seeing the fruits of your hard work at the seminar.“

Henrik Hunstad:

„Thank you, Roy. It’s been a pleasure, and I can’t wait to see everyone in Oslo!“
